Tournai Cathedral

is Roman Catholic church, see of the Diocese of Tournai in Tournai, Belgium. It has been classified both as a Wallonia's major heritage since 1936 and as a World Heritage Site since 2000.There was a diocese centered at Tournai from the late sixth century and this structure of local blue-gray stone occupies rising ground near the south bank of the Scheldt, which divides the city of Tournai into two roughly equal parts.Begun in the 12th century on even older foundations, the building combines the work of three design periods with striking effect, the heavy and severe character of the Romanesque nave contrasting remarkably with the Transitional work of the transept and the fully developed Gothic of the choir. The transept is the most distinctive part of the building with its cluster of five bell towers and apsidal (semicircular) ends. The nave belongs mostly to the first third of the 12th century. Prefiguring the Early Gothic style, it has a second-tier gallery between the ground-floor arcade and the triforium.Pilasters between the round-arched windows in the clerestory help support the 18th-century vaulting that replaced the original ceiling which was of wood and flat.

Tournai Museum of Fine Arts

is an art museum in the Belgian city of Tournai on 17 June 1928 was opened. The building was the Belgian Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta designed to house a rich collection to show that the Brussels art lover Henri Van Cutsem at his death in 1904 at Tournai had given. The building, with rooms grouped around a central polygonal hall, is in itself worth a visit. The collection consists of old paintings from the bequest of Van Cutsem and from purchases, donations, bequests and deposits and gives visitors an overview of the history of painting from the 15th century to the present. An educational department prepares for photo-reproductions of the collected works attributed to Rogier de le Pasture ( van der Weyden ) full scale of the original artwork.

Belfry of Tournai

a belfry from the late 12th century and is the oldest in Belgium. In 1188 sought the French king Philip Augustus an ally in his battle with the Count of Flanders Philip of Alsace. He granted the right clock to Tournai which meant the right to build a belfry. In 1294 the tower was significantly increased, along with other expansion work on the city wall and the Notre Dame Cathedral. After a heavy fire, they restored the belfry in 1392 and got the new bells and ornaments ( mermaids, tritons and banners ).For hundreds of years the belfry survived turbulent times. In 1844 it was decided the building to adapt to the prevailing views. There was a new restoration and the tower was a neo-gothic dress fitted.During World War I did it again as a belfry tower, but now with a German soldier on the tower crowns. The heavy bombing of the Second World War left the tower alone. In 1999 the belfry as part of the group registration belfries in Belgium and France on the list of UNESCO World Heritage posted.

Perjury Monday

The first Monday after January 6 is known as "Lost Monday" or "Perjury Monday".This tradition dates from more than 700 years ago.The wealthier city inhabitants used to prepare fastuous family dinners and elect a king.Today, the family dinners have expanded to wider groups and a rabbit dish is often served.

Great Procession

The Great Procession has taken place every year since 1092, with the single exception of the year 1566, when the iconoclasts considerably damaged the religious symbols of the city. This historic procession unfolds in the streets every second Sunday of September.
